7/9 - New Blog & New Adoption Requirements in Latvia

Since our adoption journey is over, or at least on hiatus for now, we decided to switch the focus to our hosting experiences. Click here if you'd like to continue following our new hosting blog.

Before I close out this blog, I also need to mention that the adoption requirements in Latvia have changed. Families can no longer adopt independently from Latvia and instead must now use a Hague-accredited adoption agency. We were fortunate to have completed our adoption before this change in the law. I hope this doesn't discourage anyone from adopting. If it's God's plan for you and your family, He will provide the finances.

6/30 - Fast Forward to 2009!

Here we are once again getting ready to host. We’re hosting Olegs for the month of July! But before I get into that, let me give you the quickie version of what’s been going on with us. Christina has been with us for two years now and just completed the 6th grade, earning her school’s Principal’s Award for getting all A’s. This from a child who couldn’t have cared less about her schooling in Latvia!! We’re so incredibly proud of her. Another big highlight for her was making her school cheer squad. It’s funny, when Christina first got here, she had no clue what a cheerleader was. Then a year later she became obsessed with becoming a cheerleader. She’s quite the social butterfly constantly planning and going.

Christina still has a dream of becoming a famous fashion designer when she grows up and knowing her, she will probably do it!! She’s currently in Florida visiting different family members and flying back this afternoon. We’re so happy that she’s developed relationships with everyone and at this point is just part of the family. The word “adoption” doesn’t even cross our minds anymore. She’s just our daughter, granddaughter, cousin, niece, etc. and that’s that.

Grandmother is two months shy of being 101 and still lives with us!!! Did I just type that? Sometimes seeing it in print makes it hit home. She’s going strong with no signs of slowing down. She’s a little tiny thing but she’s got strength, especially when you’re trying to pry the cat bowl from her hand when she’s trying to fill it with Cheerios! Sorry, didn’t mean to go there. Moving on.

Rob and I continue to enjoy being parents and feel so blessed each and every day. We quickly came to realize that being a parent truly IS the hardest job on earth. Seems like every second there is a new decision to be made to shape this young human being’s life. Long gone are the carefree days of being the aunt & uncle who say “yes” to everything without a second thought. Now we have to be the “bad guys” every now and then and get used to saying “no.” We pay much closer attention the lyrics to songs on the radio, movie ratings, TV shows, web surfing, etc. It’s exhausting!

I’m sure I’m leaving lots of stuff out. I haven’t posted in almost 2 years. If I remember something significant, I’ll add it later. Now on to our current hosting…
